Thomas Griffith papers, 1942-1995

Papers document his student days at the UW, his early career on the staff of the Seattle Times, and his years as a staff writer and senior editor at Time Magazine and for Time Inc. Also includes manuscripts of his various book projects: Waist High Culture (1959); How True (1974), Harry and Teddy (1995), and notes and drafts of two unpublished books, on equality/inequality in America, and on "Chucky Jack" Savier, a Pacific Northwest pioneer. Also includes personal appointment calendars/diaries (1961-96), photographs (including Time Inc. publicity photos as well as personal travel photographs and slides), correspondence files, files on essays, speeches, free-lance writing, conference participation, letters to the editor, and other short writings, and related material. Also includes files related to his personal interest in the history of architecture.

Writer and journalist. Thomas Griffith was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1915 and died in New York City in 2002. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Journalism in 1936 and reported for the Seattle Times until 1942. He spent the rest of his career as a staff writer for Time magazine, retiring in 1988. Griffith wrote several books on journalism and American culture.
